Yesterday I explained the changes I’m making in my hair care routine to transition my sleek winter locks back into my flower child curls – and today I’m excited to be sharing my thoughts on Love Ur Curls’ newly launched Strong Hold Gel!

Meet Love Ur Curls

Founded by Sahar Saidi in 2017, L.U.C – which stands for Love Ur Curls – is on a mission “to encourage you to genuinely love and accept yourself – for all that you are and for all that you are not – so your unique beauty can shine through”! 

According to their website, Saidi and her team wanted to create a simple 3-Step System “designed to bring out the best in your natural curls,” that has been “filled with moisture-rich, curl-loving ingredients,” and that’s no joke! I have been using their system exclusively for the past year, and I’m continuously impressed by my results – documented best in yesterday’s article “The Spring Hair Update!”

Before I get into my thoughts on this newest offering, I want to take a moment to thank Sahar, Vanessa, and the entire Love Ur Curls team! Thank you all for crafting the best curly hair products on the market, and for including me in the Love Ur Curls family!

The Strong Hold Gel

A few weeks ago my L.U.C., rep., Vanessa, reached out to share today’s launch and to inform me that my Strong Hold Gel PR Box was on the way!

The Strong Hold Gel was designed to “lock in definition, minimize unwanted frizz, and fight humidity” while “leaving curls glossy, smooth, and sleek with lasting hold and shine.”

It was formulated with key ingredients like bamboo – to create “a flexible ‘armor’ to prevent breakage while adding a high-gloss finish” – and wild cherry bark – which acts like a ‘bodyguard’ and “zips up the hair surface to block out humidity and pollution” – this gel is for the #CurlyGirl looking for the ultimate curl defining product!

The Love Ur Curls team recommends using this product like any other gel product: start with your base product, such as a leave-in conditioner or the All-In-One Styler (a personal favorite since 2018!); apply the gel as you normally would and allow the cast to set; and break the cast with your oil of choice, such as the Elixir Oil!

My Thoughts

When my box arrived I could hardly contain my excitement! As I discussed in yesterday’s article, I’ve spent the last three months wearing my hair straight for the winter, and I was excited to start the transition back to my curls! This kit included the 3-Step System (shampoo, conditioner, All-In-One Styler), the Elixir Oil, Style & Detangle Brush, a misting bottle, and of course, the Strong Hold Gel.

Since going natural in 2017 I have always preferred a gel for locking my curls into place; gels have always given me the best hold and long lasting results. But the downsides to gel products include so much hold that your hair resembles a helmet; after drying and setting they can sometimes flake out of your hair; and they tend to be thick, goopy, and even resemble glue. 

The Strong Hold Gel has totally changed my outlook on gel as a product.

Not only is this gel not sticky, it almost feels like an oil in your hands and applies to the hair like a cream. I’ve been using this product for about two weeks now and I’m still impressed by how much shine it instantly adds and is able to maintain. Historically, this level of shine has only been achievable on my straightened hair or from doing an oil treatment.

Normally I prefer to air dry my curls but I used my diffuser during my initial test and was very impressed by how quickly my hair dried. And once set, this gel is no joke! As I’m writing today’s article, I’m on day five of my most recent wash-n-go, and with some minimal touch ups to the roots (which always frizz first for me) and the ends (which are still recovering from being straight) I could push these curls at least another day.

I’ve explained in the past that I prefer to apply my styling products while I’m in the shower – firstly, because Love Ur Curls products are hydrophilic and work best when you apply them on very wet hair, and secondly because that’s my routine – and wearing a microfiber hair towel while I finish my routine. Sometimes my hair is in that towel for an hour before I take it down, and then I’m out the door. So, I have not yet allowed the gel to fully set and dry before adding the Elixir Oil – I’ve just been adding a dropper to the ends and calling a day, and I think these results speak for themself! 

And as of today, the official launch day, I’m on day five of my most recent wash-n-go and only needed to touch up my hair with a bit of the Volumizing Foam and the Elixir Oil. That’s nearly impossible for my hair! I will most definitely be adding the Strong Hold Gel to my wash-n-go routine!
