As a lifelong New Englander and an avid skier, I’m no stranger to a blustery winter day. And even though I love to frolic through a spring meadow or a romp down a summer’s beach, there comes a time when I want to swap my cutoffs for a cable knit, and that means a new set of packing challenges!
My Cold Weather Trip
Stacey and I have just got back from our second-ever trip in our Coleman 13B trailer, and our first time taking it out in cold weather!

To recap, my mom Stacey bought the trailer – which we’ve named Casita! – in July of this year and we immediately took her down to Florida for a week (that vlog is live on the W.A.T.S., YouTube channel!). While there we got caught in a tropical heatwave, and learned very quickly how effective the A.C. unit is! This time around, we headed north to Plainfield, Vermont, where we ended up catching a Nor’Easter on the way home!

My Capsule Wardrobe
Like our first camper trip, we brought our beloved dogs Dante and Mylee!

When it comes to packing for Dante, I always make sure to pack at least one extra serving of food, his bed and blanket, several toys, spare potty bags, his ear cleaning wipes, and we finally got a set of bowls to keep in the camper! They’re covered in rhinestones, courtesy of Dazzle Boutique!

Stacey and I packed the bare minimum clothing wise. For me, I focused on layering pieces – extra warm socks, leggings, compression tops, and athletic wear. And no road trip would be complete without my Dr Martens.
My toiletries are something I always prioritize, and ordinarily so is hair care. I even brought the entire Love Ur Curls set, but didn’t end up using any of it because it was too cold to shower in the uninsulated bathhouse. And because this was a camping trip, I didn’t pack any makeup, and wore simple hoops in all 3 earring holes for the weekend.
Stacey is our resident health guru, and as such she was in charge of pre-packing as many food items as possible. This included several jars of overnight oats, and, like the true magician she is, she brought her insta-pot and crafted several truly incredible & delicious meals including: rice & beans, birria tacos, and a delicious stew!

And like the very best dog-grandma, she handmade – and frosted! – treats for the dogs!

Various Cold Weather Vacay Necessities
No matter what cold-weather destination you’re headed to, there’s some items you’ll want to pack!
Let’s Head to the Mountains
If, like me, you enjoy taking to the mountains once the snow starts to fly then you’ll know there are some items that are non-negotiable: thermals and long underwear, turtle necks, snow pants, ski socks, and a waterproof coat.
But there’s always a way to accessorize! For me, I add touches of color through my additional warming layers, such as my neon pink turtle fur and a pair of floral print mittens by Roxy. And for an added layer of “extra”, I selected both my skis and my boots because both of them came covered in sparkles!

City Must Haves
I may have grown up on a horse farm, but I’m a city girl at heart! If you’re trading simple living life for a fast paced season in your nearest Metropolis, you’ll want to make sure you have some basics in your luggage.
Starting with the basics – one of the best parts of a city is being able to walk to most destinations, which means you’ll need a comfortable and waterproof shoe. If you’ve read any of my previous travel content you might have noticed that I always travel with my Dr Martens; they’re sturdy, comfortable, and aesthetically can be paired with anything.
While you’re walking about, you’ll want to keep away the chill with a proper coat. If you’re more worried about rainy weather than the temperature, I highly recommend a trench coat as they’re very chic and look good with anything. If you’re combating freezing temperatures, I love the look and feel of a wool pea coat. Similarly, the clean lines allow this piece to paired with anything in your wardrobe.
And to finish off the outerwear layers, I like to opt for a hat, scarf, and gloves. I prefer scarves that are cut like a big square: I find that this shape allows for folding and wearing in various ways, such as a scarf-and-bonnet combo or even as a shawl. When it comes to hats and gloves I tend to be very picky – so much so that Stacey handknit fingerless gloves that cover my forearms, and an oversized beanie that fits all of my hair!
My Thoughts on Onion River Campground & Camping in General
Both Stacey and I agree that we feel more confident each time we take the trailer out; it becomes a bit easier and more intuitive to connect the trailer to the car, and each trip gives us a chance to identify a new chance to improve.
After accidentally camping during a flash freeze in a tent in Tennessee – all of which is documented in our Mississippi Road Trip Vlog – it was nice to have Casita to keep us warm! And on that same note, it wouldn’t be a proper camping trip without a campfire! Keeping a bag of fire starters in the camper made it ridiculously easy to get the fire started, even with damp wood.

Sadly this was the last trip of the 2025 season, but we’re excited to keep exploring all that the U.S., has to offer! We’re in the process of planning our first cross-country trip, as well as some weekend trips up and down the Eastern Seaboard.
My overall thoughts on Onion River Campground is that it was a great place for the dogs! They loved having so much off leash time, and exploring the orchard & surrounding woods. They also loved our excursion to Morse Family Maple Farm!
With that being said, there were some “unsavory types” of people, who had stayed for the duration of the season and were in clear violation of the aesthetic rules that were made clear through our booking site. So, would I go out of my way to stay here again? Probably not. But, if I was passing through the area and needed a safe place to stay for the night, I would stop.
