Autumn; A Cruel and Strange Mistress

Autumn, much like Spring, in New England is best described as unpredictable. It seems as if each week brings a new climate, and with it a drastically different dress code. How are we supposed to get dressed when the weather varies so drastically?

Take today, November 15, for example. When I randomly woke up at about four o’clock this morning (yeah, sometimes I just do that), it looked like it was snowing. An hour later and it was pouring (it’s still raining, if you wanted to know). Granted, I don’t have classes today so I don’t “need” to get dressed, but, you get the point. The forecast says that today will reach a high of 54F degrees and that it will rain all day. But, tomorrow is supposed to be sunny with a high of 63F.  What am I supposed to do with this information?

This time of year is perfect for the old classic; layering. Layering will keep you feeling comfortable all  day long because you can peel-as-you-go. Obviously, we all know that layering shirts is great, but have you tried layering pants and socks? Trust me, after growing up on a New England horse farm, I know how to keep warm in Mother Nature’s very worst, sometimes I even look semi-presentable.

But, just because I can layer up to stay warm, doesn’t mean I can account for those random days when the sun breaks through and I feel like running around in shorts and a tank top. On those days, I like to cuff my jeans, find an old and worn in t-shirt (translation; that shirt that seems to have appeared from thin air, doubles as sleep wear and even though I literally just slept in it, I’m too lazy to actually change for class), throw on a light jacket and some weather appropriate shoes.

This is the time of year when I fall back on to what my family calls “my uniform,” which consists of the things that I wear until they NEED to be washed. And what, pray tell, are these pieces?

Shoes

  • Dr. Martens
  • Converse
  • (Honestly, I’ll wear both of these all year round and quite frequently do)

Pants

  • This amazing pair of dark grey/black, acid/bleach drip skinny jeans from Zara
  • This random pair of Bullhead skinny jeans from Pacsun that I can’t decide if I hate or love

Tops

  • My Teen Wolf hoodie (#TeamSterek)
  • This black and white flannel I found at Target
  • The afore-mentioned t-shirt that I both sleep in, work out in, hang out in, and wear in public (it’s huge, grey and says “tribe” on the front)
  • Another one of those where-in-the-world-did-this-come-from shirts, this time, a longsleeved black shirt (the tag says it’s from Gap, but who knows if that’s actually where I found it)

Do you have a go to Autumn outfit? Maybe a few pieces that you wear all of the time? If so, tell me about it in the comments sections below! Just remember that no matter what the weather sends your way, everyday you will SLAY!

My go to’s: Birkenstock clogs with socks (despite the fact that it mortifies my fashion blogger daughter) Hollister Skinny jeans, a random USA Wildcats cheer tee and a zip hoodie I’ve “borrowed” from one of the kids. Colder than 60 requires a fleece northface on top…
