The Meaning Behind the Name – We Aim To Slay

Recently, I’ve been working on a blogging schedule in order to keep myself on track. I keep a journal of post ideas, ranging from #7DaysOfSlay to sharing what’s going on in my life, and I also try to schedule when I’ll post certain things, so that I can work on posts before I plan to post them (#JournalismSkills lol).

But all of this planning and deep thinking (trust me, keeping a blog takes considerable thinking in ways I never anticipated), has made me consider something: is the true intent of We Aim To Slay being presented to my readers? Truthfully, I don’t think it is, and for that I apologize.

When I started this blog in 2016, I was twenty-years-old, working as an intern in the *now defunct* editorial department of NYLON Magazine. I had spent much of my preteen and early teenage years reading fashion blogs (which ones you ask? You’ll have to stay tuned 😉 ) and realized, “Hey, I have things to say and adventures to share; I can do this too!”

Deciding on the name, We Aim To Slay, was easy because it perfectly encapsulated who I am, how I choose to look, and the idea that everyone can look amazing, every day, by simply being true to themselves and expressing that through their wardrobe.

This is discussed, somewhat, in my first post, We Aim To Slay. But even as I link that post to this one, so much about who I am and how I dress has changed in the last two years.

So who am I? I suppose I could be any number of people, at any moment of the day.

I’m a writer; a reporter at a newspaper, and an internet blogger. I’m an almost twenty-three-year-old, biracial, woman, living in America. I’m someone who loves yoga, and watching Netflix, and listening to music, and reading all through the night. I’m someone who believes deeply in the powerful energy of nature. I am someone whose natural response to almost any statement is a song lyric or book/movie quote. I’m an older sister, and a daughter, and a granddaughter. I am someone with big dreams, and the plans to make them a reality.

That’s something I try to encapsulate in my aesthetic everyday. Maybe that’s why my wardrobe is overflowing and taking over my room; each of my facets needs a way to express itself. And each facet is expressed through my makeup or lack of makeup, how I style my hair, if I decide to wear sweatpants or a dress, even when I decide between my teal, mermaid scale printed Converse or my black gladiator sandals or my maroon Doc Martens boots.

When I decided to make the tagline of We Aim To Slay, “Some days I look like a glamazon. Some days I look like a bum. Everyday, I SLAY,” I knew I had fully explained this blog in one line.

Some days I wear a full face of makeup and I style my hair, either with the natural curls or by wearing it straight. I wear a carefully selected outfit, and I coordinate my accessories. Some days, like this past week, I only fill in my brows, line my eyes, and swipe on some mascara. I’ll wear what those close to me would consider my “uniform”; dark wash skinny jeans, Converse, and some sort of T-shirt. And while it sounds like there’s no continuity between those aesthetics, there is, and that continuity is what this blog is all about.

You don’t have to stress over every little detail of your appearance when you have the confidence that comes from feeling comfortable in your skin. That kind of confidence is what I channel when I think of the word “Slay”, and it’s that confidence I hope to share with each and every single one of you. In the words of everyone’s favorite GBF – “You go, Glen Coco!”

So from now on, you’ll be seeing a whole mix of posts on this blog. There will be makeup routines, there will be hair routines, there will be fabulous outfits. But, you’ll also find my inner thoughts and personal feelings regarding trends and fashion news and what’s happening in the world around me.

And so I’m asking you, my beloved readers, to remember that you are important, you are unique, and every single day is an opportunity for you to SLAY!
