After doing quite a bit of reading and research, I was very excited to try making a DIY sugar wax. I found a recipe and directions for how to make the website Sprouting Healthy Habits. While the recipe was easy to follow and quick to make, the finished product wasn’t great. If the wax had too much time to cool, in order to not burn the skin, it became too solid to work with. When I tried to reheat the wax in order to make it more pliable, it became excessively sticky.
- mix sugar, water and lemon juice in a pan
- stir and turn stove on high heat
- once boiling/bubbling reduce to medium heat
- At this point you want it to produce little bubbles (if it starts to bubbling/boil, lower the heat and stir constantly)
- Once its a golden color, turn off the heat
- Now, take a spoonful of the wax and put it into the fridge and allow to cool in order to test the consistency. Once cool it should be thicker than honey, you should be able to roll it around in your hand. But if it’s still too runny or sticky you should return it to the pan on medium low heat and stir for a few more minutes. Test again. (If you let it burn while on the stove, the mixture will be completely solid once it cools)
- Once you have the right consistency, pour it into a bowl and allow to cool for about 30 minutes.
Even worse that the difficulty of finding the right consistency, the wax was ineffective in removing hair from the eyebrows, upper lip, the peach fuzz on cheeks, armpits or legs. This was true for me and two of my friends.
Have you tried making your own sugar wax? What were your results? How does your recipe differ from the one I tried? Let me know in the comments, and remember to SLAY!
